PESQUISA, DESENVOLVIMENTO E INOVAÇÃO NO BRASIL
TRAJETÓRIA RECENTE E DESAFIOS
Abstract
The general objective of the study was to analyze the current scenario of
research, development, and innovation (RD&I) in Brazil. To achieve this goal, a
bibliographic review and a survey of data on RD&I in Brazil and in the world was carried
out. The Brazilian postgraduate system is continually expanding, but it has not yet reached
a desirable level when compared to developed countries. In order for RD&I in Brazil to
continue to grow sustainably, some actions are necessary: seeking solutions to concrete
problems in society, building a long-term strategic agenda, increasing the number of
master's and doctoral scholarships offered, increased investments in research and
development (R&D) made by the public and private sectors and reduction of regional
inequalities in the country. The reduction in the amount of resources allocated to R&D
may indicate a setback in relation to the advances achieved in previous years, which is
very negative for the country's development.
Despite these problems, Brazil has positive characteristics in the field of RD&I: growth in the number of master's and doctoral
courses, the increases in the granting of stricto sensu postgraduate degrees and in the
number of private master's and doctoral degrees and amount of scholarships awarded for
engineering studies. In view of what was exposed in the work, it was possible to conclude
that Brazil develops actions in favor of improving the innovation system, but needs to
make changes in some crucial aspects in order to continue expanding with quality and in
a sustainable manner.
